Malaysia is one of the most financially accessible destinations in Southeast Asia. Plan for an average of 108 euros per day for a comfortable stay, excluding flights. But depending on your preferences, this budget can drop to 45 euros or rise to 230 euros. Here's everything you need to know to plan your trip with confidence.

A Budget That Adapts to Every Traveler

Malaysia has the advantage of catering to all budgets. Three distinct spending categories stand out.

The budget option (approximately 45 €/day) allows you to stay in a 1 or 2-star hotel, eat at local restaurants, and use public transportation.

The comfort budget (approximately 108 €/day) offers a 3-star hotel, a compact rental car, a wide variety of restaurants, and activities such as a guided street food tour in Penang or an excursion to Malacca.

The luxury budget (approximately 230 €/day) includes 4 or 5-star hotels, a large SUV, three-course gourmet meals, and a diverse selection of exclusive activities.

Flights from France

No airline currently offers a direct flight from France to Malaysia. You'll need to plan for a stopover, typically in Singapore or Doha. Expect to pay from 500 euros in economy class, with checked baggage and carry-on included.

For those seeking more comfort, premium economy starts around 2,000 euros, and business class from 4,000 euros.

A few tips to reduce the cost:

  • Book your ticket 4 to 6 months in advance
  • Compare different arrival airports (Malaysia has six)
  • Consider multiple stopovers for a lower fare

Note: All travelers must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) at least 3 days before arrival.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Malaysia is significantly cheaper than in Europe. Youth hostels in major cities offer nights between 15 and 25 euros.

A 3-star hotel will cost around 35 euros per night, while a 4 or 5-star establishment will cost at least 70 euros. For a beach stay or nature getaway, hotel resorts with swimming pools and fitness centers are available from 100 euros per night.

Transportation

In cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang, public transportation is reliable and very affordable. A taxi ride starts at 0.85 euros, then 0.65 euros per kilometer.

For long-distance travel between cities, air-conditioned intercity buses are very popular. A Kuala Lumpur–Penang trip costs about 10 euros. It's advisable to book online at least a day in advance, as these buses often fill up quickly.

If you prefer to rent a car, here are the indicative daily rates:

  • Compact car: from 30 €
  • Mid-size car: from 60 €
  • Large vehicle or SUV: from 80 €

Note: Driving is on the left in Malaysia.

Food

Food is arguably the most enjoyable part of your travel expenses. Local cuisine is flavorful and incredibly affordable.

At a local restaurant or street stall, expect to spend between 7 and 15 euros per person. Traditional dishes like Nasi Lemak (coconut rice) or Mee Goreng (stir-fried noodles) are available from 1 to 2 euros.

At a tourist restaurant, plan for 15 to 25 euros. For a three-course gourmet meal, budget a minimum of 30 euros.

At the supermarket, prices are equally accessible: 1.15 euros per kilo of bananas, 0.50 euros for 1.5 liters of water, or 0.80 euros for 500 g of bread.

Activities

Popular activities in Malaysia cost between 25 and 45 euros per person. Among the must-sees are excursions to Malacca or guided street food tours in Penang, ideal for discovering the country's culinary richness.

For more exclusive experiences such as diving in Borneo or a Batu Caves tour with firefly viewing, plan between 65 and 95 euros.
