Vantage point and visitor centre for the BOH Sungei Palas plantation in the Cameron Highlands: panoramic views, free factory tour, and cafés overlooking the tea terraces.

The BOH Tea Centre is the vantage point and visitor centre for the Sungei Palas Garden, a plantation owned by BOH, Malaysia's leading tea producer. Located in the Cameron Highlands (Pahang state), the site offers sweeping views over terraced tea fields, a free factory tour, and two cafés perched above the plantations. Here's everything you need to know before heading here from Tanah Rata.

Why visit the BOH Tea Centre

The centre brings several attractions together in one location: a viewpoint overlooking hundreds of hectares of tea plants, a free-access factory tour, the history of BOH since 1929, and two panoramic cafés. Another rare advantage in the Cameron Highlands: entry is free, making it an exception among the region's paid attractions. The site appeals equally to tea enthusiasts and travellers seeking an elevated vantage point.

The story of BOH Plantations and Sungei Palas

The story begins in 1929, when J.A. Russell, a British entrepreneur, founded BOH Plantations. It was Malaysia's first tea estate in a mountainous region, on high-altitude soils that proved particularly suited to growing Camellia sinensis.

In the 1950s, BOH acquired Sungei Palas, which was in poor condition at the time. Tristan Russell, the company's president, oversaw the gradual restoration of the plots, which became one of the group's flagship plantations over the decades.

Public access followed the Cameron Highlands' tourism boom. In 2007, BOH opened its visitor centre, named J.A.'s Balcony in honour of the founder. Its architectural signature is a 6-metre overhang balcony above the tea plants. In 2019, the Tristan's Terrace extension opened to the public, accommodating around 200 visitors with clear views over the plantation rows.

What to do and see on site

The walkway and panorama

From the car park, a wooden walkway crosses the tea rows and climbs to the main pavilion. The uphill path is integral to the experience. Visitors with reduced mobility can take the paved road to the top to avoid the steps.

Once there, the J.A.'s Balcony and Tristan's Terrace platforms overlook the tea valleys. In the morning, mist rising over the plantations creates the layered landscape typical of high-altitude tea estates.

The factory tour

Free guided tours of the factory are offered throughout the day. The route reveals only part of the production and packaging chain, but gives insight into the main stages: withering, rolling, oxidation, drying and leaf sorting. A small theatre screens BOH's history, and an exhibition of vintage equipment adds to the heritage experience.

The cafés, shop and facilities

The two cafés (J.A.'s Balcony and Tristan's Terrace) share a common kitchen. The menu offers pastries, scones and hot dishes, including nasi lemak, a Malaysian classic. The site also features a shop selling branded products and an ice cream stand, useful for a break after the climb.

Practical information

  • Opening days: daily except Mondays, daytime until late afternoon. Check current opening hours before your visit.
  • Admission: free entry, making it an exception among Cameron Highlands' paid attractions.
  • Recommended duration: allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on whether you have a café break and take the factory tour.
  • Parking: spacious, but crowded on weekends.

When to visit

The Cameron Highlands enjoy cool highland weather year-round, with milder temperatures than the Malaysian lowlands. Rain is possible in any season, but heavier towards the end of the day: a morning visit maximises the chances of clear skies. The morning mist over the tea fields, which is frequent, can actually create an atmospheric backdrop for photography.

Crowds are heaviest on weekends and Malaysian public holidays. To enjoy the site in peace, aim for an early arrival, around 8–9 a.m., on a weekday.

How to get there from Tanah Rata

Tanah Rata is the usual base for international travellers in the Cameron Highlands. Three options to reach the BOH Tea Centre:

  • Rental car or scooter: the most flexible option. Roads are narrow and winding; careful driving is recommended.
  • Taxi or Grab app: convenient for a round trip. Expect a modest fare for the one-way journey; confirm with the driver.
  • Organised tour: often combined with other sites like strawberry farms. Time on site is determined by the group's schedule.

Nearby and elsewhere in Malaysia

If you extend your stay in the peninsula, several sites complement a Cameron Highlands visit. Kek Lok Tong temple, in the Ipoh area, is worth a detour for its limestone caves converted into a sanctuary. Further north, in Penang, Kek Lok Si temple is one of Southeast Asia's largest Buddhist complexes. For nature, in Borneo, Bako National Park and Batang Ai National Park offer ecosystems very different from the highlands.
