Belum
Belum, a 130-million-year-old tropical rainforest in northern Malaysia: safari on Temenggor Lake, Royal Belum State Park and encounters with the Orang Asli.
At the heart of Perak State, Belum reveals one of Malaysia's best-kept secrets. This ancestral tropical rainforest, nestled on the Thai border, forms the largest continuous forest complex on the Malay Peninsula. A sanctuary of exceptional biodiversity and cradle of age-old traditions, it promises an authentic escape for nature lovers seeking pristine wilderness.
A forest over 130 million years old
The Belum forest complex stretches majestically across some 300,000 hectares. At 130 million years old, this forest surpasses the Amazon and the Congo Basin in terms of antiquity.
For centuries, Orang Asli communities have made their home within this remarkable ecosystem. These indigenous peoples have forged a harmonious bond with the forest, preserving their ancestral customs while respecting the natural balance.
Today, the Malaysian government recognizes Belum's ecological importance. The territory holds the status of Tier 1 Environmentally Sensitive Zone. In 2007, Perak authorities officially designated 1,175 km² of the Belum forest reserve as a state park, named Royal Belum State Park.
A rich biodiversity
The forest shelters fauna of stunning diversity. Fourteen species of mammals among the most threatened on the planet find refuge here:
- The Malayan tiger, whose population has sadly declined
- The Asian elephant, the majestic giant of the jungle
- The white-handed gibbon, a canopy acrobat
- The sun bear and the tapir, emblematic creatures
The avifauna, meanwhile, counts over 300 species. Belum holds the national record for hornbill species diversity: it is the only Malaysian forest hosting all ten hornbill species found in the country, including the rhinoceros hornbill, the great hornbill, and the helmeted hornbill.
Flora is equally impressive. Three thousand flowering plant species flourish within the protected area. Three Rafflesia species thrive here—that giant flower considered the largest by volume in the world. Its spectacular blooming captivates botanists and fortunate visitors alike.
