The Jesselton Hotel
The Jesselton Hotel
Kota Kinabalu's first modern hotel, opened in 1954 on Jalan Gaya. Colonial architecture, 44 rooms and suites, uniformed doorman, central location.
At 69 Jalan Gaya, in Kota Kinabalu's business district, The Jesselton Hotel occupies a rare heritage address in Sabah. The establishment, opened in 1954, is the city's first modern hotel built after World War II. Its colonial façade, uniformed doorman and 44 rooms make it a landmark for those seeking to stay in a place with genuine historical depth.
Why choose The Jesselton Hotel
Three qualities distinguish this hotel from other Kota Kinabalu addresses:
- A unique built heritage in Sabah, a direct witness to post-war reconstruction
- Central location making most of the city's sites accessible on foot
- Classic hotel service, notably embodied by a doorman in colonial uniform
The address suits travellers drawn to architecture, British colonial history and characterful hospitality, rather than those seeking contemporary resorts.
A colonial legacy in the heart of Kota Kinabalu
Built in 1954, The Jesselton Hotel was Kota Kinabalu's first modern hotel erected after World War II, at a time when the city needed complete reconstruction. The project emerged on the former Bond Street, initiated by Hong Kong investors encouraged by colonial governor Sir Herbert Ralph Hone.
The architecture draws from 1940s Hong Kong style, with then-innovative concrete structures. In 1978, entrepreneur Datuk Wong Tze Fatt acquired the establishment after managing it. A 1989 renovation shaped the current colonial façade, added an elevator and an extra floor.
Among notable guests, boxer Muhammad Ali stayed here following his 1975 fight against Joe Bugner.
Atmosphere: classic hospitality and colonial identity
The Jesselton's atmosphere rests on a deliberate choice: preserving the codes of British colonial hospitality without slipping into pastiche. The uniformed doorman at the entrance, high ceilings, wooden furnishings and carpets create a refined setting, closer to a traditional house than a standardised international hotel. The establishment is entirely non-smoking.
Rooms: 44 keys across several categories
The hotel offers 44 rooms and suites, arranged in several ranges to suit different traveller profiles:
- Superior and Deluxe: classic layout with air conditioning, cable television, minibar, tea and coffee facilities and complimentary WiFi. High ceilings and large windows bring in light.
- Boutique Queen and King: contemporary design enhanced with Victorian touches, for solo or couple stays.
- Boutique Extra: additional bed, suited to families with children.
- Junior Suites: more spacious, pronounced colonial style, bathroom with separate shower and bathtub.
Some rooms feature balconies overlooking the urban surroundings. Safe, hair dryer, robes, slippers and laundry service complete the amenities.
