The Eastern & Oriental Hotel

·
Prestige

Founded in 1885 by the Sarkies brothers, the E&O commands a unique seafront position in George Town's UNESCO centre, spanning the Heritage Wing and Victory Annexe.

The Eastern & Oriental Hotel, known as the "E&O", has occupied a singular place in George Town since 1885: it is one of the rare hotels in the UNESCO-listed historic centre to command a seafront façade overlooking the Strait of Malacca. Founded by the Sarkies brothers, who also designed Raffles in Singapore and the Strand in Rangoon, the establishment belongs to the same heritage lineage as the great addresses of the Grand Tour of Asia.

Why stay here

  • An unbroken history since 1885, housed in a founding building of Southeast Asian hospitality.
  • The Heritage Wing completely restored in 2019, featuring 100 suites and a waterfront lawn.
  • A location at the heart of the UNESCO historic quarter, within walking distance of George Town's temples, shophouses and street art.
  • Five dining venues and a vintage bar covering every occasion, from Malaysian buffet to afternoon tea.
  • A PAÑPURI organic spa and an infinity pool facing the Andaman Sea.

Atmosphere

The E&O cultivates an unapologetic colonial register, without museum-like rigidity. In the Heritage Wing, Moorish minarets, a hall crowned by an acoustic dome, porters in khaki uniforms and bellhops in colonial helmets compose a theatrical setting wholly consonant with the building's age. The Victory Annexe, inaugurated in 2013 in homage to the original 1923 annexe designed by Arshak Sarkies, strikes a more contemporary note: clean volumes, bay windows overlooking the sea, current amenities. The two wings respond to each other without competing; you drift from one to the other according to mood, from the hushed tea-room to the modern pool.

The suites

The hotel is divided between two wings with distinct atmospheres.

Heritage Wing

The original wing comprises 100 refurbished suites arranged around a lawn pool. Corridors have been opened to natural light, and vintage furnishings—parquet floors, plantation shutters, claw-foot tubs—converse with contemporary Oriental artworks. The range includes:

  • Superior Suites: separate sitting room, bedroom, bathroom with bath and shower, city view.
  • George Town Suites: three spaces, double-glazed windows overlooking the UNESCO quarter's streets.
  • Straits Suites: arched windows, open desk and dining area facing the Strait of Malacca.
  • Writers Suites: sitting room, bedroom and separate dining area with bar, sea view.
  • Pinang Suite: 241 m², king-size four-poster bed, private balconies over the sea, kitchenette.
  • Deluxe and Premier Suites: sitting corner, some with balcony or garden terrace.

Victory Annexe

This wing houses 118 Studio Suites and 14 Corner Suites in classical-modern design. All feature UHD television, coffee machine, tea station and mini-bar. The wing also houses the infinity pool with Andaman Sea views, the fitness room and the E&O Gallery dedicated to Penang's history.

Restaurants, bar and spa

  • Java Tree (Heritage Wing): semi-formal table, heritage dishes and wine list.
  • Planters Lounge (Victory Annexe): breakfast through dinner, Andaman Sea view.
  • Sarkies (Victory Annexe): Malaysian and international buffet.
  • Palm Court (Heritage Wing): Indian, Malaysian and Chinese cuisine, and English afternoon tea served from 3pm to 5pm, a tradition maintained since 1885.
  • Farquhar's Bar (Heritage Wing): oak and brass counter, leather sofas, open 5pm to midnight.

The PAÑPURI Organic Spa works exclusively with organic products and offers traditional Thai, Ayurvedic, Balinese and Japanese shiatsu massage. For shopping, the hotel houses the Emporium (books, batik, jewellery, Panpuri products), De Salone (hair salon), SK Gems & Jewellery and Virinchi Tailor for bespoke tailoring.

Location and access

The E&O stands at the intersection of Farquhar Street and Penang Road, within George Town's UNESCO perimeter. It's roughly twenty kilometres from Penang International Airport; the hotel offers shuttle service and provides parking. The centre's main dining addresses, galleries and shops are within walking distance.
