The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat
The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat
Adults-only retreat in Ipoh, Perak State: 44 private villas, natural geothermal springs and spa at the foot of limestone hills dating back 260 million years.
The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat occupies a valley in Ipoh, in Perak State in northern Malaisie, framed by limestone hills 260 million years old. The estate spans 9.2 hectares fed by natural geothermal springs, with 44 private adults-only villas welcoming teenagers aged 12 and above.
Why stay here
The property combines three rare assets for the region: spectacular karst geology, warm mineral waters accessible directly on the grounds, and an adults-only policy that maintains a serene atmosphere. It's an ideal choice for a rejuvenating stopover after Malaysia's major cities or before heading to the Cameron Highlands.
The establishment positions itself in the luxury segment: architecture integrated into the landscape, fine dining under the direction of chef Lee Choon Boon, and treatments rooted in Asian healing traditions.
Atmosphere and setting
The retreat harnesses the surrounding limestone terrain: rocky peaks, caves and waterfalls shape the flow through the property. The rainforest beyond remains visible from most communal spaces. The meditation cave and natural waterfalls are signature features of the place, freely accessible to residents.
The absence of young children and the distribution of villas across 9.2 hectares create exceptionally low noise levels, even during peak season.
The villas
Accommodations are divided into five categories, all in individual villas:
- Lake Villa: lake views, private pool and geothermal hot tub fed by natural springs. King or twin bed configuration.
- Water Villa: positioned along a canal, featuring outdoor shower, geothermal basin and private pool.
- Garden Villa: spacious layout opening onto tropical vegetation.
- Grand Garden Villa: brighter design, suited for couples.
- Royal Villa: two bedrooms, residence-style for families or special occasions.
Dining and spa
Three venues share the dining experience. Jeff's Cellar is set within a natural limestone cave, with a wine-focused menu and a privatizable space for intimate dinners. Pomelo restaurant serves Asian and international cuisine with continuous service. On the Rocks, on the terrace, functions as an evening bar facing the hills.
The spa draws on three distinct traditions: traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and Malay rituals. Contemporary treatments use ESPA and Margy's Monte Carlo product lines. Preliminary consultations allow you to design a multi-day program for extended stays.
Also available are the open-air geothermal basins, whose mineral composition feeds the estate's wellness offerings.
Location
The retreat is approximately 15 minutes' drive from Ipoh city center, allowing you to combine nature immersion with quick access to urban attractions. From Kuala Lumpur, plan for around two hours of driving, mainly via highway. Kuala Lumpur International Airport remains the most convenient option for reaching the region from abroad.
Around the area
The Ipoh region deserves at least a day of exploration. Several sites are easily accessible from the retreat:
- The caves of Perak Tong and Kek Lok Tong, Buddhist temples nestled in limestone caverns.
- Ipoh's old town, with British colonial architecture and heritage cafés.
- The Cameron Highlands, highland tea plantations, accessible as a day trip.
- The Gerbang Malam night market, for Ipoh street specialties.
- The Tambun Hot Springs, another geothermal site in the area.
To extend your stay, other Malaysian properties complement this stopover well: the Belum Rainforest Resort for primary rainforest immersion, or the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang for a urban and heritage experience. In Ipoh itself, the WEIL Hotel offers a city-center alternative.
