Laban Rata Resthouse
Laban Rata Resthouse
Mountain refuge at 3,272 meters altitude on Mount Kinabalu, the mandatory staging point for climbers tackling Southeast Asia's highest peak.
Perched at 3,272 meters altitude on the slopes of Mount Kinabalu, Laban Rata Resthouse is the essential staging point for climbers embarking on Southeast Asia's highest peak. Managed by Sutera Sanctuary Lodges, this mountain refuge is the largest at Panalaban base camp and the only one housing a restaurant. It is reached after 4 to 6 hours of hiking from the mountain's foot.
Why stay here
Laban Rata Resthouse is no ordinary accommodation: it's a strategic waypoint. Without this night at altitude, climbing Mount Kinabalu in a single day would be nearly impossible. Climbers sleep here for a few hours before a nocturnal departure, usually around 2 a.m., to reach the summit (4,095 m) at sunrise.
Comfort here remains rustic, befitting the environment. Yet the refuge provides the essentials: shelter, a hot meal, a bed, and a team experienced in guiding hikers through this demanding stage.
Atmosphere and setting
The refuge's atmosphere stems from its isolation. Cut off from roads, accessible only on foot, Laban Rata operates to the rhythm of the mountain and the generator that powers it. The common room fills in late afternoon with hikers restoring their energy around a buffet before an early night. Windows open onto Kinabalu's granite slopes and, on clear days, a sea of clouds below.
The refuge is entirely unheated: pack warm clothing, especially for the sanitary facilities. Temperatures frequently drop near freezing at night.
Rooms and dormitories
Private rooms
The refuge offers three private rooms, each with unheated en-suite bathroom:
- Room 1: 18 m², 2 twin beds, up to 2 people
- Room 2: 16 m², 2 twin beds, up to 2 people
- Room 3: 27 m², 3 bunk beds, up to 6 people (suitable for families or small groups)
Mattresses, pillows and blankets are provided: no need to bring your sleeping bag. Toiletries are also available.
Mixed dormitories
The refuge's main option remains mixed dormitories, with 30 bunk beds distributed across several rooms accommodating 4 to 12 people each. Wooden flooring, clean bedding, mattresses, pillows and blankets are provided. Toiletries are to be brought. Bathrooms are separated by gender, and as throughout the refuge, showers are unheated.
Dining and services
The restaurant serves three meals at times aligned with the climbing rhythm (as a guide):
- Supper: 2:00 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. (before departure for the summit)
- Breakfast: 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (upon return from the summit)
- Dinner: 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Tea and coffee are served during supper and breakfast. Filtered UV-treated drinking water is available at all times. À la carte orders are possible outside these hours, at guests' expense.
The Goodie Bag Shop, near reception, sells beverages, snacks, socks and medications. The shop also offers rentals of warm jackets, torches, blankets, sleeping bags and towels, subject to availability. Non-slip rubber shoes are sold on site.

Location
Laban Rata sits at Panalaban base camp, on the slopes of Mount Kinabalu, within the national park of the same name (State of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo). The trail starts from Timpohon Gate, at approximately 1,866 m altitude, and climbs to 3,272 m over 6 km. Plan for a half-day of steady hiking to reach the refuge.
What to explore next
After climbing, many travellers extend their stay in Borneo to discover the jungle and endemic wildlife of Sabah. The Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge, on the banks of the Kinabatangan river, offers opportunities to spot orangutans and proboscis monkeys. For a beach interlude, Gaya Island Resort, off Kota Kinabalu, provides a welcome contrast after the altitude challenge.
