A Peranakan mansion steeped in history
The house was built in 1822. It belonged to Tan Kim Seng, a Malacca businessman and philanthropist whose family had left China for Malaysia in the eighteenth century. In 1876, his grandson Tan Jiak Choo undertook a complete reconstruction for 14,000 dollars, a considerable sum for the time.
The address stands on what Dutch colonists called Heeren Street, and what Chinese residents named Holland Street. The original building stretched over 100 metres in length. Three roof openings ensured natural light and ventilation, a principle of Peranakan architecture still visible today. A well, still present near the old café entrance, supplied the household.
The garden you cross occupies the site of the former stables, where the family kept carriages, horses and even a small menagerie including a tiger and deer. The sculpted doors and windows have been restored, as have the mosaic floors and wall tiles imported from England in the nineteenth century. At the entrances, traditional Chinese couplets recall the dual cultural identity of the Babas and Nyonyas.
Rooms
The accommodations echo Peranakan architectural codes within restored spaces. Each room features an en-suite bathroom with toiletries, a safe, a mini-fridge, satellite television, a telephone with international calls and air conditioning. The original sculpted doors and windows, as well as the nineteenth-century English tiles, have been preserved where possible.
Dining and spa
Breakfast is a buffet featuring Asian and European specialities, served in a room with an open roof that also functions as a dining space during the day and evening.
The spa is organised around an open-air water garden. Five private treatment rooms spread over two levels offer massages and treatments inspired by the traditions of the Malaysian archipelago. Therapists use natural botanical and aromatic ingredients.
