Hill Lodge
Hill Lodge
Hill Lodge offers 10 heated bungalows nestled on a hillside within UNESCO-listed Kinabalu National Park, a 2-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu.
The Kinabalu National Park, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, shelters one of Southeast Asia's richest ecosystems: over 5,000 species of vascular plants and 90 species of lowland mammals. Within this protected area, perched on a hillside, lies Hill Lodge, one of the park's accommodation options alongside Rock Twin Share, Suite Liwagu, and Peak Lodge.
Why choose Hill Lodge
- A location directly within the national park, within immediate reach of hiking trails and the conservation centre.
- Individual heated bungalows, designed for the cool highland climate.
- A private balcony-terrace for each unit, overlooking highland tropical vegetation.
- An intimate setting: just 10 bungalows, far removed from the scale of urban hotels.
Atmosphere
Hill Lodge operates more as a mountain base than a conventional hotel. The wooden bungalows are scattered across the slope, connected by short pathways, and the immediate surroundings are pure highland tropical forest: cool temperatures, morning mists, birdsong. The atmosphere remains serene, punctuated by early morning hikes and evening returns. Evenings are understated—no bustling bar, no swimming pool—which suits the lodge's purpose: quiet rest before or after a day in the park.
The bungalows
The lodge has 10 bungalows, each accommodating 2 to 3 people. Each unit features a bedroom with either a king-size bed or two single beds, as preferred. A cot can be added for families. Heating is a thoughtful amenity here: nights are cool at this altitude.
Interior features include an LCD television with cable channels, a desk, and an electric kettle. The private bathroom is equipped with a hot shower, robes, hairdryer, and slippers. Every bungalow opens onto a balcony-terrace overlooking the park.
Dining and services
Hill Lodge has no on-site restaurant. Two dining venues lie within a short walk:
- The Liwagu restaurant, serving Malaysian and international cuisine with continuous service throughout the day.
- The Balsam Café, open early in the morning, where a buffet breakfast is served (subject to confirmation based on your booking rate).
Exact opening hours and breakfast inclusion conditions may vary; it's best to confirm these at the time of reservation.
Activities from the lodge
Several activities are accessible on foot from Hill Lodge:
- The park's botanical garden, with guided tours several times daily.
- The conservation centre, dedicated to the massif's biodiversity.
- Hiking trails departing directly from within the park boundaries, ranging from one-hour walks to the ascent of Mount Kinabalu (which requires specialized high-altitude accommodation, such as Laban Rata Resthouse).
Location and access
Hill Lodge sits approximately 2 hours' drive from Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah State and the main international arrival point. The road gradually climbs in elevation from the coast. Access is by private vehicle or through an organized excursion.
