Tabin Wildlife Resort

·

The sole accommodation within Tabin Wildlife Reserve (1,214 km²), 45 km from Lahad Datu: wooden chalets, Big Five wildlife observation, and jungle trails.

Tabin Wildlife Resort is the only lodge situated within Tabin Wildlife Reserve, a protected area spanning approximately 1,214 km² in eastern Sabah, Borneo. Its raised wooden chalets on elevated walkways serve as a base for wildlife observation in one of Malaysia's last great primary forests.

Why stay at Tabin

Established in 1984, Tabin Reserve protects an ecosystem home to Borneo's Big Five: pygmy elephant, proboscis monkey, orangutan, rhinoceros hornbill, and saltwater crocodile. Over 300 bird species have been recorded here. The lodge is the only permanent base within the reserve, fundamentally changing the pace of observation: night safaris, dawn walks, and wildlife watches depart directly from the chalets, without lengthy transfers.

The team works with locally trained naturalist guides and operates according to low-impact tourism principles, aligned with the reserve's conservation mission.

Atmosphere and forest immersion

The site is entirely remote, 45 km northeast of Lahad Datu, at the end of a gravel track. Electricity is provided by a generator due to its isolation, which contributes to the quiet nights punctuated only by insects, frogs, and bird calls. The wooden chalets, inspired by local architecture, are connected by elevated walkways that wind between trees and lead to the Sunbird Cafe, the lodge's social hub.

Upon returning from the trails, a forest herb foot bath is offered—a simple but welcome respite after hours of walking through humid terrain.

The chalets

The resort offers wooden chalets accommodating a maximum of three guests, all equipped with private bathrooms featuring hot water, air conditioning, ceiling fans, and private balconies.

River Chalets

Located along the Lipad River, the River Chalets feature two single beds and open onto a balcony overlooking the water. The constant sound of the current becomes part of the nocturnal experience.

Hill Chalets

Positioned on higher ground, the Hill Chalets offer twin or double bedrooms and balconies facing either the forest or river. Some provide more generous space at equivalent comfort levels.

Dining and services

The Sunbird Cafe, open daily from 7am to 10pm, can accommodate up to 80 guests. It serves cuisine blending local and Western dishes, offered as set menus or à la carte. Tea and coffee are complimentary; beverages, wine, beer, and snacks are available for purchase.

  • Recreation center with reading area and natural history books
  • Shop stocked with leech-proof socks, insect repellents, and local handicrafts
  • Drinking water provided in rooms; bottled mineral water for sale
  • Generator-powered electricity

In case of medical need, the nearest hospital is approximately 30 minutes away by road, with additional services available in Lahad Datu.

How to get there

The lodge is located 45 km northeast of Lahad Datu. Regional carrier MASWings operates daily flights from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu. Buses also serve the town from Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau, and Semporna.

From Lahad Datu airport, allow approximately 1 hour 10 minutes for the journey: 25 km along the Lahad Datu–Tungku route, then a turning toward the reserve, with the final stretch being a gravel track. A private transfer with guide and vehicle remains the most comfortable option, typically included in organized stays.

Exploring from the lodge

Several points of interest are directly accessible from the resort:

  • Lipad Waterfall, reachable on foot via forest trail
  • Active mud volcanoes, prime spots for observing wildlife drawn to the mineral-rich waters
  • Hiking trails and routes used for night safaris

Extending your journey in Malaysia

Tabin fits naturally into a Borneo itinerary and can be combined with other stops across peninsular or island Malaysia. For a more beach-focused experience after the jungle, Gaya Island Resort offers a striking marine contrast with Mount Kinabalu in view. On the peninsula, Pangkor Laut Resort and Areca Hotel Penang complement a nature-culture journey.
