Resort on Pulau Banding island, a base camp for exploring the pristine Belum-Temengor rainforest and Lake Temenggor in peninsular Malaisie.

Perched on the artificial island of Pulau Banding, in the middle of Lake Temenggor, Belum Rainforest Resort is one of the few accommodations situated within the Belum-Temengor forest complex. This tropical rainforest, 130 million years old, is the largest in Malaisie. The resort serves as a logistics base for exploring Royal Belum Park, spotting Rafflesia or elephants, and navigating among the wooded islands of the lake.

Why stay here

Belum Rainforest Resort offers three concrete advantages. First, its location: no other accommodation of this caliber sits as close to Royal Belum Park, significantly reducing travel time for guided excursions. Second, the range of accommodations, from rustic rooms to private villas with pools, welcomes solo travelers and family groups alike. Third, logistical organization: halal restaurants, transfers from Gerik, and a nature activity program arranged by the on-site team.

The atmosphere

Arrival is by road, then a short journey to the island. Once there, you hear mostly the forest: hornbills, insects, sometimes the gentle lapping of the lake against the jetties. Buildings are scattered among the trees, linked by shaded pathways. At night, lighting remains subdued to protect wildlife. The whole operation functions as a base camp: you return from excursions, dine at the Hornbill or Sidai, and set out again the next morning on water or into the forest.

Six accommodation categories

Azlanii

Rooms for two, with king or twin beds. The atmosphere remains rustic. Amenities follow an eco-conscious approach: eco-certified products, reusable water bottles, and filtered water. Air conditioning, minibar, and tea and coffee facilities are provided. Ironing is available upon request.

Chengal

Spacious category with lake or garden views depending on the floor. Bathtub, smart television, coffee machine, robes, and slippers. This category includes the accessible room for guests with reduced mobility.

Kampung House

Traditional chalets overlooking Lake Temenggor, available in three sizes: Tualang (2 people), Pulai (4 people), and Meranti (6 people). Malaysian vernacular architecture with contemporary amenities inside (smart television, bathtub, coffee machine).

Villa Tanjung Wan

Seven bedrooms accommodating 10 to 18 people, with a private infinity pool opening onto the forest. All meals are served at the villa. The package includes an excursion program: Rafflesia spotting, hikes to waterfalls, bamboo rafting, and kayaking. Ideal for groups or extended families.

Villa Santubong

Three bedrooms, up to six guests, with private pool and terrace. Full board and activity program similar to Villa Tanjung Wan.

Houseboat

The resort's most distinctive accommodation: a floating apartment with four cabins and an open deck. One master bedroom with ensuite, one double bedroom, two five-bed dormitories. Stays last two or three days, meals included with a barbecue on deck.

Restaurants and services

The two restaurants, Hornbill and Sidai, serve Malaysian specialties and Western dishes, all fully halal-certified. Special diets (vegan, gluten-free) are possible with notice of about a week before arrival.

Amenities include: complimentary wifi throughout the resort, parking, luggage storage at reception, ironing facilities in rooms (except Azlanii category, upon request). In case of health issues, Gerik Hospital is roughly forty kilometers away; the military camp doctor nearby can provide emergency care.

Activities from the resort

Lake Temenggor, an artificial body of water of 15,200 hectares, is the departure point for most outings: island cruises, birdwatching, kayaking, or bamboo rafting on calm waters. Traditional bertam fishing is practiced from the jetty using a catch-and-release principle.

In the forest, guides lead travelers to salt licks where animals drink, or to accessible waterfall trails. The Rafflesia, the world's largest flower, grows in a specific zone within the park and requires a guided hike to observe. The forest is also home to elephants, otters, and remarkable bird diversity, including several hornbill species. Encounters with large wildlife are never guaranteed and require patience and discretion.

How to get there

The resort is located on Pulau Banding, midway between the east and west coasts of peninsular Malaisie.

By car

From Kuala Lumpur, allow four to five hours: North-South Expressway to Ipoh, exit at Kuala Kangsar, then toward Gerik and the East-West highway leading to Pulau Banding. From Penang, the route passes through Kulim then Gerik.

By train and bus

The nearest ETS station is Kuala Kangsar, roughly ninety minutes from the resort. Multiple daily bus services connect Kuala Lumpur to Gerik. From Gerik or Kuala Kangsar, the resort arranges private transfers upon reservation.

Combine with other stops

Belum Rainforest Resort naturally fits into a nature itinerary in Malaisie. To extend your forest immersion, the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge in Borneo offers complementary wildlife observation along a river. Trekking enthusiasts can continue to the Laban Rata Resthouse, an overnight stop on Mount Kinabalu's ascent. For urban contrast, the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang or Hotel Puri Melaka in Malacca round out the colonial heritage side.
