In Malaysia, mobile coverage has advanced dramatically in recent years, notably thanks to the national JENDELA programme. Today, connectivity in remote areas has improved considerably, though challenges remain depending on topography. Here's what you need to know to stay connected during your travels.

Operators to prioritise in rural areas

Choosing the right operator becomes crucial the moment you venture beyond urban hubs like Kuala Lumpur or George Town.

  • CelcomDigi (the coverage leader) : Following their merger, they now operate the country's most extensive network. This is your most reliable choice for rural zones, plantations, and remote inland areas (with exceptionally broad national coverage).
  • Maxis (Hotlink) : Excellent for speed, though occasionally more limited than CelcomDigi in deep jungles or isolated small islands.
  • U Mobile : While competitive on price, coverage tends to remain concentrated in urban areas and major highways.

Connectivity in Borneo (Sabah & Sarawak)

In East Malaysia, the situation is more complex due to mountainous terrain and dense rainforest.

  • Coastal zones : 4G is widespread, with 5G developing primarily in urban centres.
  • Inland areas : Signal can be intermittent. In national parks (such as Mulu National Park or along the Kinabatangan River), longhouses and resorts often have their own Wi-Fi connections, but mobile coverage may disappear entirely.

Since 2023, Malaysia has permitted Starlink operations. By 2026, many facilities in extremely remote areas—eco-lodges, rural clinics, schools—are using Starlink terminals to deliver speeds exceeding 100 Mbps in locations where no cable infrastructure exists.

Tip : If you're planning an extended stay in a coverage gap, verify whether your accommodation has a satellite antenna.

Practical tools

  • JENDELA Map application : This is Malaysia's official government tool (available on iOS/Android) allowing you to check actual coverage (fibre and mobile) neighbourhood by neighbourhood, including in rural zones.
  • eSIM : For maximum flexibility, services like Holafly or Airalo work well. However, for remote areas, purchasing a local CelcomDigi SIM card or an eSIM directly at the airport is often preferable to ensure better compatibility and stability on local networks.
